Psychosis
Psychosis & Schizophrenia
Periods where perception and belief separate from shared reality — hearing voices, holding fixed unusual beliefs, or disorganised thinking.
Psychosis affects up to 3% of people; schizophrenia around 0.3–0.7%.
What often comes first
Noticing several of these over weeks is a reason to talk to someone — not a diagnosis.
- Withdrawing socially and dropping usual activities
- Suspiciousness or a feeling that things are 'aimed at' you
- Hearing faint sounds, whispers or one's name being called
- Difficulty thinking clearly or holding a conversation thread
- Sharp drop in school or work performance
