When the nervous system stays in survival mode long after a frightening or overwhelming event has ended.
Around 6% of people develop PTSD in their lifetime; higher among veterans and survivors of assault.
What often comes first
Noticing several of these over weeks is a reason to talk to someone — not a diagnosis.
- Intrusive images or memories that arrive uninvited
- Nightmares or waking with the body already alarmed
- Avoiding places, people or conversations linked to the event
- Startling easily, scanning rooms, sitting facing exits
- Feeling detached, foggy or 'not really here'
