Mood

Depression

Also known as Major depressive disorder

A persistent low mood and loss of interest that lasts weeks or longer and changes how you think, sleep, eat and move through a day.

Around 1 in 6 people experience depression at some point in life.

What often comes first

Noticing several of these over weeks is a reason to talk to someone — not a diagnosis.

  • Things you used to enjoy start to feel flat or pointless
  • Waking much earlier than usual, or sleeping far more than usual
  • Small decisions take an unusual amount of effort
  • Withdrawing from messages, plans and people without a clear reason
  • A quiet, constant self-criticism that wasn't there before
